Dry Creek Flashes
Weather is main topic

The weather is the main topic of news in the Dry Creek valley this week. Frigid temperatures for the next few days will keep people from their normal work.
Schools are closed all over Tennessee due to snow that came Tuesday. We in the valley got just a small coating of snow, and some is already melting.
There is about the same on the hills surrounding the valley. We don’t believe that we will see any snowmen being built by children.
Smithville and other areas may  have more snow. It is just cold in the valley.
Thanks to Lisa our bird feeders are full for many birds. Today we have many male cardinals, bluejays, woodpeckers, an abundance of all the little finches, wren, and sparrows and, we believe, two robins. They must be lost from the flock that was here Saturday.
Yesterday we saw a big load of logs on a huge truck coming out of the Frazier Hollow. Somebody has been working hard to cut those logs. Our hat’s off to them.
We say hello to Jewel Barney, who celebrated her birthday on Jan.1. We all love Jewel and appreciate her. Here’s to wishing you, many more happy birthday’s. Congratulations Jewel.
We enjoyed talking with Mrs. Betty Wilson on Monday. She writes a column from her community, which we enjoy reading.
Hello to a nice little lady in Alexandria, Marlene Prichard. It was good talking with her this week. Because of the flu, extreme frigid weather, and being in the older age, we just stay home. Glad for those who can still go where they want to go. Enjoy while you can.
Kathy Hendrix and Sawyer visited our neighbor, Helen  Burt, who has had surgery and is now at home. Helen still is not eating as she should. We continue to pray that she is much better this week. In he 80s I remember the temperature was 5 degrees below zero.
We have had some calls about sycamore trees. yes, many young sycamore trees can be found growing near our beautiful Dry Creek stream of water. When we came to live in the valley in 1939 there was a huge sycamore tree growing on the Frazier farm that was very useful. It was a growing near the dwelling.
There was a Walter Barrett who traveled to country communities and made pictures, we believe maybe some on postcards that could be mailed. there was also another man, a Mr. Hale. So whoever it was, they used the huge sycamore tree as a background for a baby picture of my late husband, W.W. Frazier.
As years went by the big sycamore cracked open and became hollow on the backside. It was still useful. Children ran inside it when a sudden rain came down. So it provided shelter for them. Later, it was a safe place for a hen with small chickens when a storm came or darkness overtook them. You country folk can relate to this story. More next week on the sycamore.
