I want to congratulate Marie Vaughn Roberts of Warren County who recently celebrated her 80th birthday. Marie is a first-cousin to my late husband, J.D. Vaughn.
She is the daughter of the late Cephus and Ida Turner Vaughn. Marie and I have many happy memories together. She and her first husband, Shirley Walker, who is deceased, would visit us and we’d have the best of times.
I remember one Sunday when I returned from attending church at New Home Baptist. Marie and J.D. were busy in the kitchen whipping up our dinner. They even made a blackberry pie. I don’t remember who made the pie, but the berries were picked earlier in the week by me.
There were other times when Marie and Shirley and their two children, Cathy and Sammy, would spend an entire day with us, and sometimes their visit would carry over until the next day.
I really appreciate those years when families visited more often. You didn’t need an invitation. Folks would just show up. Then, we’d get busy fixing chicken and gravy, biscuits, shucking some corn on the cob and making a custard pie. Everyone always bragged on my pies and banana pudding.
As I further think about it, we never felt like someone was imposing when they dropped in and wanted to spend the day. There were many times when we had to change our plans right on the spot, but we never let on to our visitors.
We didn’t have a telephone, so there were no ways of letting someone know that our plans had been changed.
We never wanted anyone to think that they were not welcome at our home whether day or night.
Families used to visit more often
