The young woman wrapped the shawl more tightly about her to ward off the night chill. Her steps were swift and her eyes watchful lest anyone should be following her. It would be disastrous if the law found their secret meeting place. It changed weekly in order so that no pattern could be detected. However, there were always men willing to do another's bidding for a little money. One word spoken to the wrong person, and they would all be subject to death - the penalty for their faith. Sometimes she wondered if it was really worth the risk to be with other believers. After all, Christ was with her constantly; couldn't she worship just as well at home?
Reaching the door of the meeting place, she quietly tapped on the door twice, paused, and tapped three times more. Even then the door did not open, but a voice asked quietly through a crack in the door, “Who do you say He is?” She quietly answered, “Jesus Christ the Savior.”
Once inside, she could breathe easy. She could feel Christ's spirits in the small, cramped room they had secured for this week. She saw smiles and felt the love all around her. She realized it was worth the risk to be with other believers of the way. They shared their troubles, their triumphs, their praise, and their prayers. It was essential to their spirits to be with each other, even if only sporadically. It was a time of fellowship, spiritual healing, and faith building each needed in order to face their trouble-filled lives. It was their faith that enabled them to face the ugliness of their world. Yes, it was worth the risk to her.
This was the church of the past under Roman rule. However, it could well be the church of the future. Christians face increasing persecution and judgment. If our freedom deteriorates to the point churches would have to meet in secret, would we have the same zeal for Christ that the early Christians had? Would we risk our life to be with other believers? Would we have the courage to testify for our Lord or would we remain silent in fear? Would it be worth the risk to you?
“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” (Matt 16:25-26)
