No matter what habit you are trying to master, from dieting to quitting smoking, everyone will virtually tell you the same thing … it's simply 'mind over matter'. … I really hate hearing that phrase for several reasons. 1 - it's not simple; 2 - my mind is chaotic enough without trying to be master over something that I enjoy such as eating or smoking; 3 - I am so stubborn, I can't stand being told what to do, which often puts me at odds with myself. As Paul said in Romans 7:14-15, “We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”
For instance, I have been trying to quit smoking. I know; I know …. It's bad for your health; its stinky; and on and on. The thing is, I truly enjoy smoking. It's not the nicotine I'm addicted to; it is simply something I enjoy. However, my lungs can no longer take the pressure. And now I have been forced to give up my cigarettes. Let's face it: none of us like being told that we have to do something. Why? We want to think we have control over every aspect of our life. And usually the one thing we think we have under control is the one thing that has control over us. Consider an alcoholic or drug addict. What is the one thing they will say when confronted with their abuse problem? “I can stop any time I want.” That is a lie straight from Satan. He wants us to think we have control when we actually don't. If we think we have control, we can lie to ourselves that we can keep doing whatever we are doing that is harming us.
It is difficult to admit there is something controlling your life other than yourself. The simple fact is, we cannot control our life - our life either belongs to God or to the devil. At the end, who do you want in control of your immortality?
