Resolute - very determined; having or showing a lot of determination.
New Year's Day usually brings on new resolutions for everyone. “My resolution is to lose weight…My resolution is to get in shape…My resolution is to save more money and spend less.” Sound familiar? We make resolutions in the spirit of a new year - a new beginning.
Before we begin announcing our resolutions, we should ponder on the definition of the word resolution.
To proclaim a resolution, we must be resolved to accomplish a goal. We must be very determined to make that resolution a truth rather than just a statement made on Jan. 1 and forgotten by Jan. 31.
So, what should we truly be determined to accomplish in the year, and how do we go about fulfilling our resolution?
We know we have no strength of our own. No matter how determined we begin, we become less and less resolute with each passing day unless we have another source of strength.
While everything we do of our own accord will probably not last, if we seek God's face and ask Him for the strength to remain resolute throughout the year, the good we can do is limitless. It doesn't matter what the resolution is, God will hear our prayer and give us the strength we need, for “things which are impossible with men are possible with God” (Luke 18:27).
However, instead of having a resolution that only benefits ourselves, why don't we re-examine our resolution for 2014 and make it about God?
Instead of losing weight, we could break generational bonds holding us prisoner. Instead of getting our body in shape, why don't we resolve to strengthen our spiritual being by praying more, reading God's word more, and being a better follower of Christ?
Instead of saving money, we could try to save souls who are lost, being bolder in our witness for Christ.
None of these will be easy; the evil one always rises to come against us when we try to do more and be more for God. However, we must remember who has conquered death and given us the same strength.
We must remember that while we contend in a physical world, “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against power, against the rulers of the darkness of this age” (Eph. 6:12).
It's time to stand resolute for Christ.
