Recently, an amazing friend of mine directed me to this quote. Some of it is in Japanese, and much of it is difficult to understand as it is a quote from an anime cartoon created by Tohru Honda. So I'm not going to print it here.
Instead, I am going to explain this in my own words.
Each of us has something on our back. It's kind of like a fruit in that it smells nice, it looks wonderful, and it draws others towards us. It is indeed, a very tempting fruit for others. However, we ourselves are unable to see or smell this fruit ourselves. Yet it is there none the less.
What this fruit represents are the good qualities that we cannot see about ourselves because they are attached to our backs.
For instance, my friend might describe a kiwi on my back. This kiwi represents my visual depth. I see into others, in ways that many cannot. The problem is I don't see a kiwi. I physically see nothing, as it is attached to my back.
I know something is there, I can feel it. Yet as I try to visualize it, all I see is a plain brown plastic bag with something wrapped in it. At the very least I know something is in there, but I can visualize it as nothing but plain. However, as it is on my back, I can only visualize it from my mind's eye. I have to trust in the description given to me by my friend. For many, this is hard to do.
Yet we all have these qualities that we cannot see about ourselves. They are there. Just because we cannot see them, doesn't change that fact. The problem is we live with ourselves every day. We see the good and the bad about ourselves all too often. So much, that it distorts and hides many things about ourselves.
That is when these qualities move to the back. We then see only what is in front of us, and what is behind us seems too farfetched to take notice of. We are only reminded of these qualities when others see it attached to our backs and describe it to us. If you are trusting in nature, you believe. If you are less trusting, you try to shrug it off. Yet you can't because it is a part of you.
Since reading and understanding this quote, I have found myself looking deeper, not only into others, but into myself. I want to believe there is a kiwi on my back. I want to find a way to take this kiwi off my back and wear it on my chest instead. Then I can see what everyone else does at all times.
So now I ask you, what's on your back?
From Heart to Head
Whats on your back?
