When we dare to dream, we open ourselves up to pain, disappointment, and sacrifices we never considered when that dream surfaced. It almost seems like it's not worth it to dream. The price of dreams can be very high when you add in the risks involved in pursuing those dreams.
I have many dreams. Some I gave up on due to lack of interest, too much personal risk, and a faded mental image of what those dreams used to mean. With others, I hold on to their meaning and emotional value. They are like a lighthouse in the fog for me.
Dreams can crush you. They can change you in the worst way. They can steal precious moments from you that would be better spent pursuing something far more constructive. Bottom line if you allow them to consume you, they can suck the life right out of you if you're not careful.
So why have a dream?
Life is short. You have heard this I'm sure, but it could end at any given moment. So there is little time to waste.
If we go through life only doing those things necessary for survival, we would have nothing to look forward to. Time would drag on, and we would be left with a single minded view of a much broader picture. Would you go to see only the right hand of the Mona Lisa, and nothing else?
Despite the downside of dreams they give us something to strive for, they offer our lives meaning and substance, and ultimately breath energy into what would have been a rather dismal life.
I dare to dream. I dream of a successful writing career, I dream of that special someone, and I dream that all my dreams find a meeting point somewhere in the near future. If I didn't, what would my life be? It would be nothing more or less than a casual stroll in the rain.
So dare to dream. It makes life worth the wait!
