In a pride of lions there is one thing that stands out more than anything, loyalty. The leader of the pride will protect his pride unto his death without as much as a second thought. Should another male lion challenge him; the leader will see this as an act of betrayal. Then a fight to the death will ensue. The winner gains the loyalty of the pride and the sole right to rule.
We do not see this kind of loyalty in any other species, other than man. Even then, our history of loyalty is spotty in comparison. We may stand behind the ideas of one leader for a short while, but when those ideas become stale we look to another. Doesn't really matter if evidence showed his ideas to be successful, we just aren't inspired to follow him once those ideas become outdated.
So when I speak of loyalty, what does this mean to you?
Divorce rates continue to rise. I imagine infidelity is to blame in most cases, though don't hold me to that. In my experience, this has been the most popular cause; at least in those I know.
I find this lack of loyalty distasteful. We all search for something worth living for. When we supposedly find it, we take that for granted and treat it as we would a soft drink cup from a local fast food joint; throw it out when we are done with it.
When did we lose our sense of loyalty? Not just towards those closest to us, but for ourselves as well? I have always thought dignity and loyalty go hand in hand. So are we simply saying “I don't take pride in myself, so why bother taking pride in anything I have?”
For those that display “the loyalty of the lion”, you should be proud and wear it like a badge. This is growing more and more uncommon as time passes, so take pride in that fact. It is well earned.
For those that do not, you know who you are. Tomorrow morning you will still have to wake up to yourself. The question is will the ones you claim to love the most be there to greet you?
Don't be surprised if they aren't.
