Going behind the wood shed

Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord. - Psalm 94:12
There was nothing worse as a child than getting a spanking … or 'whipping'. What was even worse was being sent outside to cut a limb that you knew was going to be used on you. In a child's eyes, this was a brutal punishment. There are many of us that were sent to cut a limb a second time because we chose the one that would hurt the least the first time. I can remember being mad that I got a whipping, mumbling under my breath when I finally got away from Momma. However, I will be the first to admit I probably didn't get punished as much as I should have.
We've all heard parents say 'This hurts me more than it hurts you.' As a child we could not understand this phrase. How could it possibly hurt a parent when they whipped us? They were the one wielding a limb, fly swat or, even sometimes, a house shoe. They were the ones sending us 'behind the wood shed' to await the dreaded whipping. As we grew up to have our own children, however, we understood the phrase perfectly. The child needs correcting, but we really hate to see them hurt in any way; but we also understand as a parent that the child needs correcting so they will become better and responsible adults.
As Christians, we sometimes need a whipping, too. I recently had one myself. My mouth overrides my sense and it often gets me into trouble. What gets me into even more trouble is that I type faster than I think, and if you're on Facebook as much as I am, that is not a good thing. When God chastises us, it hurts Him. He hates to see His children hurt, just as we hate to see our children hurt. God has to 'whip' us sometimes over things that are going to hurt us spiritually if we continue our current behavior. He knows if He doesn't correct us, the devil will have an open door to our hearts causing us to move away from God. He corrects us to shelter us, to heal, and that our witness may not be harmed any further.  “If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who correct us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subject to the Father of spirits and live?” (Heb 12:7-9)
Do not resent getting a whipping from the Lord. Be thankful that He cares enough to correct our ways, helping us to conform to His way of thinking rather than the world's.
