When I did my first Business, Inc on a barber shop, I let everyone know I was a little out of my element as I hadn’t gone to a professional barber in more than 20 years.

We had a handy set of clippers at home and my wife would give me a buzz cut every couple of months which worked for me on several fronts. It was inexpensive – well almost downright free except for the little bit of electricity from the clippers, and prior to getting home haircuts I would get a high and tight being comfortable with no hair for some time having served 17 years in the Army.

I’m also one of those people who puts off everything. I hate going to the doctor, the dentist or anyplace that works on you. I don’t know if it’s just my social anxiety or what but that’s just me.

With my wife’s passing, I had no choice. Well, I guess I could do the Howard Hughes thing but I’m not that far gone yet. No barber or hair salon has ever been able to do much with my hair and the woman who cut it this last time in McMinnville said it was like rabbit fur.

I guess it could have been called something worse but maybe they don’t want the customer too upset.
So this time around I knew a few more questions to ask.

J.J. Poss has a great hair cutting establishment just downtown that caters to the entire family and serves men, women, boys and girls. You don’t need an appointment which is a great thing as I have trouble getting the motivation to go period without having to deal with making an appointment.

When I mentioned my shortcomings in haircuts, Poss told me they call my condition Frog skin. I had to think about that one, but she explained.

“Frogs don’t have any hair,” Poss clarified.

In any case, part of my usual coverage is I get a picture. I was going to include her customer at the time but she was in the middle of a perm and there was a lot of straightening going on and the woman didn’t want to show up in the paper in that condition which I fully understood. I settled for one of Poss setting up her beauty products display which deals in professional hair care products. They’re an official Glo Makeup artist and sales specialist, Redken hair products a, Paul Mitchell and Matrix.

“We specialize in men’s, women’s and children’s haircuts,” Poss said. “Colors, perms, specialty colors and Prom and wedding up-do’s.”

Poss has been in business for 28 years which tells me she must know her profession because you have to be good to stay in the hair-cutting business for that long I would think. She is also helped by Dana West at the downtown location.

Being armed with some tough questions, I asked what the hardest haircut she finds to give and was surprised by the answer.

“It’s actually the flat-top haircut,” Poss said, explaining women even get them. “It’s the toughest because people have all sorts of shaped heads so it has to be just right and even.”

I would never have guessed, but I learn something new at each business I visit.

Headlines is open Tuesday through Saturday 8-5.
