One Person, One Community, One Mindset
Joanne Tubbs Williams
From the yard, to the College Street Gym, to the classroom at D.C.H.S. and the Tigerette basketball court, and beyond. The pictures, these paint a small glimpse of me then.
History then, did not define me. Nor did it stop on a basketball court. I found change and growth in life by accepting my other talents that broaden my character in and out of the community that were shaping whom I have become.
I am a woman. I am a black woman. I appreciate, my God given race. I also realize the past struggles, just being my race. Mine were few as others were not. I chose not to be limited within myself, and faced each trial as they came. Some doors closed, many more opened, as I grew.
History has a way of teaching and changing
us, if given the chance.
When I reflect on Black History I have read, witnessed and heard about the struggles, of my people. The stories my parents told us, and witnessed, and cautioned us about, shed light on many events.
Did I struggle? Yes. I was limited, in some ways but happy in many more.
Singing at limitless D.C.H.S. pageants, weddings, participating in the first Smithville Jamboree and honored to be asked to sing at the Spring Fling Horse Show in Shelbyville.
All this boosted my confidence. These moments had nothing to do with my skin color, but because there was a need for this talent and opportunity presented itself and I welcomed it!
So, as I look back at the "her-story" of my life, it's then I realize I have been blessed! My life's goal is to share my blessings & life lessons with ALL people.
Is division still apparent? Yes. Has there been change? Yes.
It is up to ALL of us to make a change. One person, One community, One mindset - that being truth and love.
