I enjoyed the Vaughn family reunion held at the Wayside Community Center in Warren County. Those attending were mostly Floyd Vaughn’s descedants. Also, the late Cephas and Ida Turner Vaughn’s daughter, Marie, and her daughter Cathy were there. Cephas and Mr. Floyd were brothers. Altogether, about 40 were present.
It was sad to not have Reba Vaughn Harris with us. She passed away a few months ago. Her children and their families were well represented.
Mr. Floyd and Miss Della’s remaining children, Jewell, Jimmy and Billy, always make me feel like one of the family. My late husband, J.D., was the oldest son one of eight children.

Sympathy is extended to the family of Kathy Winchester. She has been in ill health for quite a while now. But, she is well and happy now. She was kind to everyone that came in the library, when she worked there. Her funeral was on Tuesday at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home.

I have always enjoyed listening to stories told by the older folks, going back to when I was a young girl listening to my grandma Betty Hill White. Then later in life, I enjoyed stories told by my mother-in-law, Della Adcock Vaughn, and my husband’s grandmother, Sybil Jones Vaughn.
Miss Sybil, or Sibby as folks called her, would remember stories from her past, including the time when she was a little girl and how the women would tell her to go outside and play while they talked. She knew that they would probably tell a little gossip, so she would pretend to go outside but hide close by. She was like a fly on the wall while the ladies discussed many personal things, including who was expecting a baby.
Miss Sibby also knew a lot of old wives’ tales about planting a garden, how many snows would be in the upcoming winter, and more things than I can remember.
I recall once when we were visiting Mr. Floyd and Miss Della back in 1947 and Miss Sibby was there.
My back was hurting and I got real close to the fireplace since I was also chilled.
Miss Sibby said, "Young lady, you’ll be going to the hospital tonight. That baby is about to be born."
Well, she was right. Ralph was born the next morning.
I know that many things are just superstitions that have been passed down through the years, but I also believe that God gives us wisdom if we’ll only listen.
If we would only listen
