International Mother Language Day (IMLD) is a worldwide annual observance held
in February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote
multilingualism.
Everyone is invited to celebrate International Mother Language Day: Sunday, February 23rd at Center Hill Martial & Healing Arts Club (2580 Nashville Hwy, Smithville, TN, across Tiger Drive from Dekalb Middle School, and across Nashville Hwy from the Welcome to Smithville water tower) from 2 PM - 4 PM. There is no charge for this event, but there will be a donation jar available for anyone who chooses to contribute. All donations will go to the scholarship fund for yoga and karate students in financial need.
Our celebration will include language stations where kids (and adults!) can
visit with speakers of different languages and get their names and a short sentence written down in that language. Speakers will then have the opportunity to share what they love about their language with everyone. We will sing and dance in a variety of mother tongues.
If you speak a language that you want to share (or know someone that does), please
contact Krista (kristaeickmann@gmail.com), or just arrive at the celebration. We would love to have as many languages represented as possible.
There will be a food table so please bring something to share if you can. Language and culture themed foods are encouraged.
