The summer heat continues. That means watering your garden and flowers. This heat reminds me of a story my husband told me.
He had gone to San Antonio to a meeting and took his 10 year-old son with him. The temperature was almost 100 degrees and very humid. One of the men with them commented, wondering if they could fry an egg on the sidewalk. So, they tried it outside their hotel one day.. The young boy was amazed when the egg began to sizzle. Soon a crowd gathered around them. Young Mark got on his knees and tried to scoop it up, certainly not to eat it, but to really feel the sensation. It was that hot! Now, I’ll bet we see others trying this.
The children at First Methodist enjoyed an active Bible School last week. The following Sunday, they did a sharing program with "Shake it Up " music with, Jen Sherwood leading the children's singing.
After the service, the congregation gathered for a fellowship luncheon and "pounding for their new Minister and wife, Dr. John Carpenter and Kathy. I inquired of Tommy Webb, about the origin of "pounding.” He explained that it came about during the Depression when the church members couldn't afford to pay the preacher a decent salary, so they paid him off in eggs, pounds of flour, sugar, etc. Thus, the word "pounding" came about when times were hard. Good tradition!
Sympathy goes out to the family of George LeFevre, who died last week.
George was a Bible scholar. He led several Bible classes at First Methodist for about 10 years.
Get-well wishes go out to Ashton Campbell, who had a tonsillectomy last week and continued prayers for Phyllis Bennett and Jeanette France. It was good to see Doug Ward out Sunday, after his heart surgery. .
Happy Birthday to my great nephew, Ethan Absher, who turned nine years-old on August 1. He celebrated his birthday at the park with his family, on Sunday afternoon. He'll be a big 4th grader this year.
Although I've closed the Country Treasures Shoppe, I still have some of Earle Cantrell's books left. He tells of his amazing journey from an early life in DeKalb County, becoming a minister, and later, a teacher and principal in Williamson County. Just give me a call to get his recent book, The Path I Trod.
Well, the summer vacation is over for the school children and youth. Registration has begun and the first day of school is Wednesday.
Why are summer vacations and lunch hours- if you work-the shortest factors in life?
More cucumber information next week.
Be kind to everyone you meet. They could be an angel, unknown.
Amen.
Is it hot enough to fry an egg?
