The cicadas are here! We hear them, but really haven’t seen many. The male cicada makes a loud shrill, buzzing sound, with drumlike membranes located in the abdomen. The cicada is a large insect with transparent wings.
The female lays her eggs in the twigs of trees and shrubs. They place the eggs in holes that have been cut in twigs by means of a sawlike organ at the end of their abdomen. The cicadas can do much damage to trees and shrubs.
Young cicadas are called numps, and they have no wings. They live underground until they mature.
The adults die before winter. The next appearance of cicadas will be in 13 years.
The deer and the squirrels have also made an appearance. The deer get together sometimes as many as a dozen and start eating the young pears.
We have one squirrel, which lives high up in the White Pine Tree in the backyard. He is one smart squirrel.
Last summer he made trip after trip to the June Appele Tree, pull an apple, carry it in his mouth and then run back to his nest.
Of course, the Frazier Family made one pot, six pints, of Applesauce from the June Apple Tree.
We have no complaints, because we spend many enjoyable hours looking at God’s beautiful nature and the animals and birds he created and placed here for man to help take care of and enjoy.
Saturday was a jam and jelly making day at the home of Louise Frazier. Natalie Frazier, Rebecca Ann Frazier and Barbara Frazier-Knuckles all came to the Frazier Kitchen to learn how to make jelly and jam. A total of 1/2 pints of grape jelly, blackberry and strawberry jam, from 10-2:30 p.m., was 136 jars.
Rebecca Ann, daughter of Henry B. and Natalie Frazier, will be getting married on Oct. 1 at a country outdoor wedding in Huntsville, Ala.
Invitations, 250, why the jam and jelly? Well, Rebecca will be giving these jars of jam and jelly as favors to all present. Uncle Bruno Frazier will furnish honey for fifty jars.
Natalie and Barbara will have to take time to finish the 250 jars. Natalie is an Educator in Huntsville and Barbara is a Medical Doctor in Florence, Ala.
We think it will be finished by Oct. 1.
Rebecca Ann is the great-granddaughter of Louise Frazier.

Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Womack of Smithville were at the Murphy Center, Middle Tenn. State University in Murfreesboro, Saturday, for the Eighth Annual Commencement Ceremony of Siegel High School. The Womacks had two grandchildren, Kelly Renee Rozell and Andrew Douglas Mullendore, graduating from Siegel High School.
Siegel is the new high school in Rutherford County. This year the graduating class had 17 Valendictorians. Each one had a subject to talk about for one minute. The faculty consists of 126 teachers with 49 staff members.
Randy Rhody, Siegel Band Director, is a member of the faculty. Mr. Rhody is a former director of the DCHS Band and a native of DeKalb Co.
Rutherford Co. is doing a wonderful job spending millions of dollars to educate their children. We salute them for having people at the “helm” who know and understand what it takes to educate our children, who are the “leaders” of tomorrow.
