I know that many people place beautiful flowers at cemeteries in the spring and summer during what we call “decoration.”  I was thinking about the Young Bend Cemetery this week knowing that decoration was recently held there.
My late husband –J.D. Vaughn –has parents and grandparents buried in that cemetery.  His parents were Floyd and Della Adcock Vaughn; grandparents were Jasper and Sybil Jones Vaughn along with David and Med Hutchins Adcock.
Those families lived in the Young Bend, or what some old timers called, the “Bent.”  J.D. was born in a log cabin that was located across the road from his Pappy Dave and Mammy Med Adcock.
While thinking about them and musing, an interesting story came to my mind.  Mr. and Mrs. Adcock also had a son, Rufus Wilson Adcock, who was known as Hook.  The family only had one milk cow.  But neither Mr. Dave nor Hook knew how to milk her; only Miss Med.
Once when Miss Med was bedridden with pneumonia, they were concerned about getting milk.
So, Hook led the cow to the front porch and held her by a halter while Miss Med sat on a stool and did the chore.
That went on for several days until Miss Med got over the pneumonia and was back into her regular routine of milking and making butter.
