My own Mighty Joe Young
Musings of an old guy

Do any of you remember the 1949 movie Mighty Joe Young? It was a knock off of King Kong, instead of the gorilla being wild he was a somewhat tame guy that lost his parents and was befriended by a pretty young woman played by Terry Moore, (I wonder if she's still alive?. And, a young Ben Johnson, you know him as one of John Wayne's favorite cowboy partners.
Well, I ran into my own version of Mighty Joe Young and his faithful companion Billy!  They both work for the DeKalb County Road Dept. and Kenny Edge. You know that lately I've been complaining about the ditch in front of my house, that caused me to get a pinched sciatic nerve, and messed up my ability to do much, especially sleep. Well, Joe Young and Billy Pack came to my ditch, determined that it in fact did need work and today they conquered that pain in the back.
These guys did a heck of a job. They brought a couple of trucks and a backhoe, filled the deep washed out holes, straightened out the ditch, so it matches the curve of the road, then filled it with heavy rock that won't wash out when we get those monster rains in the Spring and Fall. I also learned something that surprised me. When they go from place to place and work to assist the homeowners in the County, rarely, if ever, do the homeowners assist them in any way. I'm sorry, but I broke that tradition, ( though I wasn't much help, I did shovel some and sweep some). It seems like if you're getting the job done, at your request, you should at least offer some help. Just because we pay their wages doesn't mean we should be unneighborly. Besides, they're nice guys, and I, myself, enjoy working; even when it hurts a little. Oh yeah, that Billy Pack sure has a gentle touch with that backhoe! I really enjoy seeing someone that takes pride in his work.
Thank you Kenny Edge, the County Road Dept, and especially to Mighty Joe and Bill. You guys made my week. Oh, one more thing. See ya next week. And, my repaired ditch proves He works in mysterious ways. I met some nice folks and got the repair I needed.  See Ya!
