Dooley carefully read a handmade sign which had been posted on the store porch in Needmore. The concept, which was used in founding Walmart, was no new thing around Needmore. We already had something very similar which was called Pete's Grocery and General Merchandise, where anything from a mule collar to a pound of JFG coffee could be bought, and on credit if you needed it.
People went there to buy a new dish pan, a pair of britches, a bologna sandwich and RC Cola, or just about anything in between. So, when Walmart came into the area we were not unprepared for it's coming.
The main difference we noticed was that Wal Mart didn't stock any mule collars, but then not one in ten of our readers even know what a mule collar is anyway. No, they are not anything like a dog collar... grin.
Dooley often stopped by the store and hung around looking as hungry as he knew how to look, and he could look pretty hungry when he needed to. Sometimes Pete would give him a bologna sandwich for helping someone load a sack of hog feed on their truck.
This day Dooley was very preoccupied as he carefully read the sign. Someone had posted a lost dog sign. It read, “Lost Dog. My dog has been gone for a week now. He has one blind eye, some kid with a bb gun shot it out. His left ear was partly torn off in a dogfight. His right front foot is missing where a mowing machine caught it. He has a limp in his hindquarters from being run over by a truck. My dog has a bad case of mange, he runs around with the wrong kind of dogs. If you see my dog, he answers to the name of Lucky.”
Dooley was touched by what he read. “I am going to be on the lookout for that dog,” he announced. “He sounds like a good possum dog; I betcha somebody has stole him.”
Sometimes I feel a little like old lucky must have felt. Can you identify with the theme song of the old TV program Hee Haw? If it wasn't for bad luck I would have no luck at all...smile.
If we place our life in the hands of God, we don't need to worry about luck, but rather we can trust Him to lead us where we need to go.
