Most of the folks who lived around Needmore were good honest, hard-working folks. They believed in God, in family and in their country. A few were not to be believed nor trusted. But the community soon figured them out and their standing in the community was pretty low. Dishonest folks weren't tolerated very well.
Having said that many of the Needmore foks were fun loving and tall-tales were often heard. They weren't told for the truth and weren't taken for the truth either. Folks would often exaggerate about how poor they were. Most of us were plenty poor but some made it sound a lot worse than it was.
One person claimed that by the time he was fourteen, most of the house flies around his house had packed up and moved out. Another claimed he kept a magnifying glass on the table so he could see if his paycheck actually had numbers on it.
Still another told about how there was one boy at school who could afford to bring peanut butter and crackers for his lunch... said he always picked a fight with him at recess just so he could smell his breath..
Still another claimed that the county poor house packed up their old used clothes and sent them to his house. One other claimed that a rabbit crossing his farm always carried a sack lunch. Another claimed his cattle were in such bad shape that the neighbors cows cried when they saw them over the fence.
One fellow said he had borrowed a neighbors possum to season his beans with when he cooked them. Said on one occasion the possum had been passed around a lot and somebody had cooked turnip greens with it and caused it to turn green.
Are any of my Needmore days articles tall tales? Well I probably wouldn't believe them all if I were you...grin.
Our world would be a far better place today if a lot more people had grown up in Needmore. Those who graduated from the Needmore School oOf Higher and Lower Learning have gone on to make Needmore proud of their native sons and daughters.
