Needmore Days
Burying the hog

We wrote before about a little dust up at the Needmore Baptist Church.

It all happened after Uncle Silas Crabtree had bought a hog from Uncle Bill Johnson. Their wives, Sadie and Sally, had crossed words just a little bit.

Well, calmer heads prevailed and the hog problem was buried, but perhaps not deep enough. Both Deacon Silas and Deacon Bill had given their wives a good talking to such as it was and the whole deacon body had met with preacher Jones and had come to agreement that this must be dealt with because revival meeting was coming up soon. To make sure there was a clear understanding of the problem pastor Jones had preached his now famous sermon about women drivers. Using as his main text Acts 27: 25 "when the ship was caught in the wind and could not bear up we let her drive." And she wrecked that whole dang blame ship.

His main points were nosy wives, belligerent women and blabber mouthed Jezebels. He also mentioned about women keeping silent in the church, bobbed hair, painted faces and gossiping deacon’s wives. Most folks seemed to understand what the problem was…grin.

Things sure were sweet around the WMU meetings at the church for a while.

"Honey, how are you today? You sure do look pretty today. Please, and thank you."

But unfortunately the hog problem wasn't buried as deeply as it should have been and a few weeks later it began to stink a little on the party phone line system You younger readers might need to ask your grandmother what a party line was ... grin.

Well it seems that Silas' new sow which they had named Sally after Uncle Bill’s wife had a liter of pigs. Sadie was heard saying that Sally could have lots of babies but she didn't know how to raise them. After she had them and had mashed them all to death except one little straight tailed sick looking one.

Well Sally just couldn't let this go by without an answer so she had remarked that they ought to have had sense enough to know that old sow wasn't any good or they never would have sold it to them. And so the problem sprang right back up in church.

Hebrews 12:15 "Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

But I am glad to report that the revival meeting took care of the problem once and for all. There was repenting, praying, neck hugging, snot blowing and forgiving all over the church house. And this time the thing was covered for good. Too often churches cover up problems and they spring up again and stink worse than ever.

Not very many churches even bother with revivals anymore. They seem to prefer just to bury their sins in shallow graves. Is it time to get back to revival meeting where we are willing to give the Lord enough time to move in our midst? Why not plan a good full length revival meeting this year just to see how it works?
