I enjoy musing about interesting things that happened many years ago. For example, I was thinking this week about the late Dr. Roy L. Twilla who was a dentist in Smithville. At this particular moment, I'm thinking about when I was a young girl and we lived near Dale Ridge.
Dr. Twilla would go out into the county to help folks who could not get into Smithville. One of his regular stops was at the home of Dee Taylor, who had a big shade tree in her front yard. People would come from all around to get Dr. Twilla to pull their teeth. Chairs would be lined up under the shade tree.
Miss Dee had a waterworks where a bucket was lowered down into the hollow on a wire attached to a series of posts. The bucket would then scoop up the water from a spring, and then a person would bring the bucket back up the hillside by cranking the device. I don't remember exactly how it worked, but it was much similar to lowering a bucket into a well and then drawing it back up on a rope.
So, fresh water was there for everyone to rinse their mouths after Dr. Twilla pulled teeth. Everyone drank from the same dipper. That is the way it was back then. At our house, I remember that we only had one water bucket with one dipper that all used.
Mama was one of Dr. Twilla's patients who got her teeth pulled while sitting under the shade tree.
He later made her dentures, or as we called them “false teeth.” Dr. Twilla was also my dentist until he retired. I then went to Dr. Jere Hale.
I always enjoy those little “snapshots’ that come to my mind while musing.
I heard someone say that life is about making memories.
I find it interesting how a person will remember such things.
