My son, Ralph, and his uncle Billy Vaughn from Murfreesboro recently discovered the Vaughn Cemetery in the Four Seasons area. They had read the DeKalb County Cemetery Book written by Tommy Webb and knew that some of the early Vaughn settlers were buried there.
Flora Mai Vaughn Adcock and Lois Ann Vaughn Duke helped them to locate the cemetery which is in a small plot in a field surrounded by trees, briars and weeds. Benjamin Vaughn and his wife are buried there, who were the parents of Jasper and Perry Vaughn. Jasper was the grandfather of Billy and Ralph while Perry was the grandfather of Flora Mai and Lois Ann.
Ralph, Billy and Flora Mai also visited the Old Bildad Baptist Church where the original Vaughn family attended. James and Sophorah Vaughn came from South Carolina in the early 1800s by covered wagon pulled by oxen and settled in the Pates Ford area near Jefferson. Later, they lived in the Young Bend or Four Seasons.
Ralph and Billy were disappointed that they could not find where James and Sophorah are buried, but Tommy Webb said they are probably also in the Vaughn Cemetery even though there are no markers for them.
The cousins, Flora Mai, Lois Ann, Ralph and Billy, are making plans to clean and restore the cemetery by repairing the broken tombstones.
