For about three months, I have watched a squirrel play outside my window each morning. It has become entertaining to see him run through the yard, climb a tree, then go back to the ground to run around in circles chasing his tail. He also runs across the road and climbs a tree at my neighbor, Clara May Hawkins’ house.
Seeing the squirrel reminded me of when I was a young girl. Like most children, my brother, sister and I had pets; everything from dogs, cats, and chickens and once a squirrel. It always broke our hearts if something bad happened to any of them.
When that happened, we held a funeral service and buried them in a special place at a nearby field. I remember one time when two cousins, Jo Dean White Redmon and Robbie Jewell White Tate, were at our house.
I don’t recall if it was a baby chicken or a bird that had died. But we decided to have a funeral service.
We put the little thing in a box and took turns going up to pay our respect and, of course, we cried all the time. Mama heard us and sneaked up crying at the top of her lungs. We were almost scared to death not knowing what was going on.
As best as I can remember, that day ended our funeral services for pets.
