My readers will remember that last week I wrote about Kenneth Wayne Harris, who passed away. When he was a young boy, our family either called him Kenneth Wayne or most of the time just Wayne. While I was thinking about Kenneth Wayne, I remembered that double names seemed to be more common years ago than today. For example, my son was known as Ralph Elwyn when he was a young boy. Let me explain.
We intended for him to be called Elwyn rather than his first name. But, my mama said she had rather call him by the first name. So, on the Vaughn side of the family, he was Elwyn. On my side of the family he was Ralph. Then there were times when we used his double name to cut down on the confusion regardless of which side of our family was being talked to. When Ralph started school at Cross Roads, Miss Alice Foster enrolled him by his first name, and that is how it has been since.
My late husband, J.D. Vaughn, was given a name with initials only, however, he was named for his two granddaddies, Jasper Vaughn and David Adcock. Many people still know me as Betty Mae. I remember that J.D.'s brother was known to some as Erbie Gene. His wife is Mattie Sue Vaughn.
I still call some of my cousins by their double names; Jo Dean Redmon, Robbie Jewell Tate, and Jimmy Carl White. One of my neighbors is Clara May Hawkins. Ralph's best friend in elementary and high school was Larry David Stanley. And my late brother, Mac Ervin, was often called Douglas McArthur when he was a young boy; named for World War II Army hero, General Douglas McArthur.
Yes, it seems that it is not as popular nowadays to call someone by a double name. I find it interesting.
