My son Ralph and I were talking about some interesting stories  the last time he visited.  I know that he has heard my stories hundreds of times, but he says that he always enjoys hearing them again.
He asked if I remembered the photograph of his great-great grandfather James Edward Hutchins that was in the home of Floyd and Della Vaughn for many years.  Mr. Hutchins was the grandfather of Miss Della, Ralph’s grandmother.
When Ralph was a young boy and we would visit Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn, Ralph always wanted to talk about the photograph which was made around 1870 when Mr. Hutchins was 30 years old.  He is shown wearing a medal that he received for serving in the Civil War.
Mr. Hutchins served in the Tennessee Army and fought in the Battle of Missionary Ridge near Chattanooga.  He was shot in the leg by a Yankee soldier and sent home to recuperate.  Mr. Hutchins lived in the Peeled Chestnut area and always resented "The Northern Aggression."
I’m not sure if this part of the story is true, but before he died in 1913, Mr. Hutchins had in his will that each of his five children was to receive an inheritance provided they swore to his request.  He wanted them to never, never wear the Union color of blue.
Ralph laughed and said that his great-great granddaddy had probably not been buried long when members of the family started wearing blue clothes.
Mr. Hutchins was the father of Mary who married Dave Adcock.  Most folks knew her as Miss Med.  They lived in the Young Bend.
Ralph has the photograph in its original frame on a wall in his Murfreesboro office.  He says that people always ask about it when visiting.
