When my husband, J.D. Vaughn, and I married back in 1946, we moved to Bratcher’s Cross Roads in Warren County. J.D. and his daddy had purchased a farm there together.
One day my mother-in-law and I were visiting a neighbor and he told a funny story about his wife. There was a revival going on at the nearby Methodist Church. The preacher was a man from out of town. It was customary for some of the members to invite him to eat a meal and to spend the night during the week-long meetings.
My neighbor’s wife was asked to help a lady in the community because her baby was being born. She went expecting to be up all night during the delivery. Well, the baby came before midnight, and the neighbor lady, who was giving a helping hand, decided to go back home.
Before then, her husband and boys asked the preacher to go home with them to spend the night thinking that the lady of the house would be away. Our neighbor man told the preacher that he would sleep with his boys in a separate bedroom and that the preacher should use his bed in the living room next to the fireplace since it was a cold winter night.
When the lady returned home, not wanting to wake her husband, she decided that she would quietly put on her gown and ease into the bed.
The preacher woke up and said, "Sister, this is the preacher. You had no idea that I would be here. I am so sorry."
The lady jumped up and made a beeline to the bedroom, shook her husband awake and then gave him the worst scolding that he had ever heard. I bet her husband always thought twice after that before inviting someone over to either eat a meal or especially spend the night.
