I want to again thank those who made telephone calls, sent cards, and brought me gifts for my recent birthday. It always pleases me to get cards whether for my birthday, Christmas or for any other reason.
Dr. White from Dowelltown brought me into the world in 1926 when Mama was staying at my Pappy and Grandma’s home at Indian Creek. Back then, a new mother was supposed to stay in bed for several days after having a baby where others could wait on her.
There is one thing about my birthday that I think is kind of funny. Dr. White wrote down the date and when a birth certificate was issued, the 21st day of the month was made into the 27th by mistake. Without paying much attention to it, my birth certificate was simply put into a box and remained there until I needed it when 16 years old and wanted to get a job.
Some friends who lived at Old Hickory said that I could stay with them and could probably get a job working at DuPont. When I applied for a job, I was asked to show my birth certificate.
I handed it to the lady and she asked me about the date of my birth. When I told her, she said that the birth certificate was different from what I had said, but I got the job anyway.
I only worked for three days because I got so homesick for DeKalb County. I rode a bus home and one of the first things I told Mama was about the birth certificate. She said that I was really born on the 21st day of the month regardless of what was written on the birth certificate.
And then she said, “I should know because I was there.”
