My daughter-in-law, June Vaughn, recently purchased a copy of a history book about DeKalb County which was put together by Ria Baker and Judy Fuson. She loaned me her book which is filled with old photographs of historical buildings and past events in our county. The two ladies did a good job with it.
As I looked at every page, I tried to remember if I knew some of the people in the book or some of their family. Someone said that a picture is worth a 1000 words.
Of course, I was especially interested in pictures such as a baptizing at Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Lower Helton. Although I was not in that particular picture, it was at Mt. Zion where I became a Christian and was baptized.
There are photos of Snow Hill Baptist and the Snow Hill Methodist churches where I used to attend as a child. In fact, in my young life I became a member of Snow Hill Baptist. There are also pictures of the many schools that once were located throughout DeKalb County, some that I went to and of course, Cross Roads where my son, Ralph, attended.
I also enjoyed seeing pictures made of Center Hill Dam being built which created the lake. Many people, including some of my relatives, moved out from that area to surrounding counties when the land was flooded because of the dam.
I think that history is so important. And it is also good to stop and think about those who came before us and to be thankful for them. Anyway, I want to thank Ria Baker and Judy Fuson for the time they put into making the book.
I recommend their book to anyone who is interested in local history.
