I would like to say hello to Mr. Ben Herman, the greeter at Walmart.
I recently wrote about a mule that we owned when I was a little girl. We called him "Old Crip" because he was crippled. Daddy only paid $10 for him and he was not able to plow or do other jobs on the farm. He basically was a pet.
Well, I thought about another funny story concerning our mule. One day, Mama asked my brother, W.B., to ride Old Crip to meet the peddler, which was about a mile from where we lived.
Old Crip was sometimes unpredictable. He liked to wallow on the ground and without warning, would simply lie down and begin wallowing.
Mama told W.B., who was 10 years old at the time, to take a dozen chickens to the peddler and trade them for items we needed. Mama had the chickens’ legs tied where W.B. could better handle them. Well, he was off to meet the peddler when Old Crip decided to lie down and begin wallowing.
W.B. was quick to jump from his back but not in time to get the chickens out of the way. Some were crushed, and the others had broken legs. W.B. came back home leading Old Crip and toting the string of dead chickens. He was sobbing as he told Mama what had happened.
One good thing from that bad situation was that we had fried chicken for every meal for about a week. Also, I think that it is interesting that Old Crip died on the same day that Daddy passed away in 1936.
