Jack Herman told me an interesting story about his son, Mark, who lives near Baltimore, Md. Recently, when the earthquake happened in Va., Mark felt his house shaking with pictures and other things falling off the walls. Mark told his daddy that it was scary, but thankfully it didn’t last long. Mark’s mother is the former Brenda Hawkins. She and Jack own and operate a nursery business in DeKalb Co.

I received some sad news when learning that Kenneth Wayne Harris of Rock Island has died. He was the youngest son of the late Clarence and Reba Vaughn Harris of McMinnville, and the nephew of my late husband, J.D. Vaughn. When Kenneth was a young boy, we all called him by his middle name, Wayne.
Kenneth was 62 years old and well known in the nursery industry. He worked for a company known as Cherokee, which sells supplies to nurseries all over the country.
A memorial service was held at McMinnville Funeral Home. The family asked my son, Ralph, to conduct the program. He along with other family members and friends spoke as they remembered Kenneth through their serious and funny stories.
Kenneth would visit us each summer when he and Ralph were growing up staying from a week to three or four. The two boys would play and sometimes get into a little mischief. I remember that he and Ralph enjoyed going to the waterfall, which was located on Herbert Vickers' farm. After working all day in the hot summer sun, the boys would head out to the waterfall and take a shower, since we did not have running water in our home.
Even though the falls was over a mile from our house, and the boys had to wind around the hillside to get there, they said it was worth it when standing under that cool water.
They also had to admit that they became hot and sweaty again after climbing out from the hollow.
I'm sure that many of my readers can identify with taking a shower under a waterfall.
Kenneth is survived by his widow, Dorothy, of Rock Island and three brothers, Joe, Roy and James Harris of McMinnville.
Another brother, Billy, died several years ago.
