My son, Ralph, says that several members of the Vaughn family want to restore the James Vaughn Cemetery in the Four Seasons area. It is located in a farm pasture surrounded by a clump of trees. The owner of the land supports the idea.
Ralph believes that the original Vaughn settlers in this part of Tennessee are buried there. DeKalb County Historian Tommy Webb agrees that James and Sophorah Vaughn are most likely there although they have no markers. After all, the cemetery is named for him.
James and Sophorah came to DeKalb County by covered wagon around 1818 from South Carolina. They showed up on the census records of 1820. They had several children, including a son named Benjamin.
Ralph says that Benjamin was the father of Jasper, Thomas and Perry (Pat) Vaughn. Benjamin and his wife are buried in the cemetery with tombstones to prove it.
Ralph has talked to Flora Mai Adcock, Lois Ann Duke and Eva Dean Duke whose grandfather was Perry Vaughn, also known as Pat. Loyce Holcomb, Royce Odom, Larry and Kenneth Knowles are interested. They are from the line of Thomas Vaughn, who was a twin brother to Jasper.
Ralph and his uncle, Billy Vaughn, are from Jasper Vaughn. The cemetery will require a new fence, a general cleanup and removable of undergrowth with restoring some of the tombstones that have gotten broken over the years.
Vaughn relatives who are interested in the cemetery should call Ralph at (615) 427-5465.
