My son, Ralph, took me last week to see Dr. Donnie Cripps for my regular checkup. As we were leaving, we saw Tucker and Carol Sue Hendrix. Carol’s parents, J.L. and Frankie Pirtle, were friends of mine along with her grandparents, Alvie and Nancy Gilreath. We all attended New Home Baptist Church.
Carol Sue and I talked about when she was a young girl attending church. We both laughed about how Ralph was so bashful. He tells everyone that he was the most bashful kid who ever lived.
I told Tucker about babysitting for his mother many years ago. At that time, Burley and Ruby had three children, John, Mildred and Orvil. Henry Carter owned a grocery store on the Nashville Highway. Ruby worked in the store and got me to babysit with Orvil. She paid me a dollar a week to take care of him.
Tucker laughed when I told him that one day I was toting Orvil and dropped him on the floor. Orvil has always said that I must have messed up his mind after his head hit that floor. Of course I know he was only joking.
Ralph and Tucker played basketball at Cross Road School. Tucker was one of the star players. In fact, all of the Hendrix boys were good ball players. I don’t remember if Mildred played basketball.
Anyway, it was good to see Tucker and Carol Sue.
