Last week while my son, Ralph, was visiting with me, we talked about when he went to Cross Roads School. Ralph says that he always thinks about those days when he drives by Cross Roads.
He told how some of the boys would go out in the woods on Verble Hayes’ farm and find a Christmas tree, pine cones and other items to decorate the school for the holidays.
He remembered when Rex Hayes was principal and how some of the boys would go to Mr. Fate Mullican’s home to buy milk for the school. Then Mr. Hayes would yell out during recess, "Milk Call"; meaning that the children could run to the lunchroom and get free milk. Ralph said that he remembered one time when Willard Pack got sick from drinking too much milk.
A funny thing that Ralph remembered was when he was in the fifth-grade and Mr. Ben Adamson was the principal and basketball coach. They had a game scheduled with Liberty. Mr. Ben took the main team in his car. An older boy in the community, a son of Charlie Hale, was to drive the second team (the substitutes) in his car. Ralph was on the second team.
When they got to Snow Hill, the driver said that he forgot to fill the tank with gas, and that it was on empty. He had also forgotten to bring his billfold. There was no time to look for a filling station, so he decided to turn the motor off and coast down Snow Hill, start the car to drive through Dowelltown, and then coast into Liberty.
They got to the gym in time for the game, which was played in the original, small gym at Liberty. Back then there were only three gyms in the county: Smithville, Liberty and Alexandria.
Ralph said that the boys put their money together and came up with a dollar to buy gas for the trip back to Cross Roads. Of course, gas was less than 20 cents a gallon back then.
