My brother Mac Ervin and my son Ralph were almost like brothers rather than an uncle and a nephew. There was not much difference in their age since Mac and my sister Joann were born after I was grown.
One thing that I was thinking about this week was when Mac tried to teach Ralph how to hunt. Mac was really good with both a rifle and shotgun.
Like a big brother would do, Mac took it upon himself to teach Ralph how to squirrel and rabbit hunt.
Mac had a small dog that was quick at chasing rabbits. The dog would run along sniffing the rabbit’s scent and then scare them from hiding under a clump of grass or behind a log. Mac was good at taking a bead and pulling the trigger.
The little dog was also good at finding squirrels if they were playing in the woods, or even when they were hiding up in a tree.
I remember one day when Mac and Ralph came to the house after being out in the woods for almost a whole afternoon. They had gotten something for supper, but Mac said that he was about to give up on Ralph becoming a hunter. He told how they had treed a squirrel.
It was a clear shot up in the forks of a tree. Ralph was coached by Mac. Because Ralph was so anxious and nervous, he missed and missed and missed, shooting up a small box of shells except one.
Finally, he asked Mac to shoot with the only shell they had left. Mac again proved his shooting skill.
With Mac’s patience, Ralph later learned to be a fairly good hunter and shooter.
