I had an appointment this week with Dr. Donnie Cripps.  He told me that some of his family will join him on a trip to China later this year.  I asked him if he wasn't afraid being so far from home.  I was just kidding of course because Dr. Cripps and his wife, Rita, travel a lot.
Dr. Cripps laughed when I told him that many of us in DeKalb County count on him for our medical attention and that I sure want him to be careful in China and get back home safely. Since I have always been a homebody, it never was important to be far from Smithville.
Back in the early 1970s after my husband passed away, Ralph wanted to take me to Oklahoma and Texas to visit with family out there.  I was excited about seeing my brother in Oklahoma and his family and my sister in Texas.  But I really got homesick in less than a week.
I don't remember what I said then, but I made up some excuse as to why we should leave earlier than planned.  I know it was my imagination, but the air seemed easier to breathe when I saw the highway sign that read “Welcome to Tennessee”.
The only other time I had been out of Tennessee was in 1946 when J.D. and I went to Ringgold, Georgia to get married.  I've written about that before.  Clay Braswell and Effie Vaughn went with us as witnesses.  They were dating at the time, and in just a few weeks later, also got married.
I would never enjoy traveling, even if I was physically able.  There is just something peaceful about being home in my easy chair.  Almost all of my days are spent right there.  I can think about other places in America as I read or watch television.  That is enough travel for me.
