I enjoyed Billy and Lou Ann Vaughn from Murfreesboro visiting with me recently. We laughed about when Lou Ann and Billy were first married about 50 years ago. She was a city girl from California and was a little surprised at the way we lived in Tennessee back then.
Billy had failed to tell her that the toilet was outdoors with no running water. She was amazed how we got a bucket of water from our hand-dug well; the way a person took a bath with a wash basin and cloth. She must have asked a hundred questions about how we lived and worked.
During our talking the other day, we recalled how Billy’s mother took a trip to see them in Arizona. Mrs. Vaughn had never flown on an airplane. Lou Ann also told about her grandmother and the first time she rode on an airplane.
According to Lou Ann, her grandmother boarded the airplane, took her seat and immediately put a scarf over her head. She was asked why. The grandmother said since she was riding in an airplane that she wanted to make sure the wind did not blow her hair out of place during the trip.
That reminded me about the first time I rode on an escalator. I was almost scared to death and could hardly wait until I could step off. I don’t remember what I was thinking. But I must have somehow thought that I would get stuck and would be unable to climb from the moving steps.
Well, a person doesn’t know what a person does not know.
