Honored guests and volunteers prepare to board a limo at the Night to Shine event at DeKalb County High School this past weekend.

It was a night to shine for over twenty students with special needs as they were honored guests at a prom designed just for them.

“Everybody was prom king and queen, Everybody gets a crown,” said Sara Halliburton, high school teacher who is an advisor to the Climate Club which played host to “A Night to Shine High School Prom” Saturday night at the high school cafeteria.

Halliburton said the event was just like the high school prom held a couple of weeks ago complete with music, dinner and a little dancing.

“There was decorations, the girls got their hair and makeup done and we even had some prom dresses donated for the girls to wear,” she said, adding a limo service was there to chauffeur the students around prior to the event.

Each honored guests was escorted by a member of the high school student body. They were there to assist them with any needs they might have during the night.

“Our honored guests were excited but at the same time our students who volunteered to help were equally as excited,” she said.

Halliburton said they designed the prom on the “Time to Shine” program by former professional football player Tim Tebow.

“It’s important for all students to get the some opportunities,” she said. “Many of these students don’t go to things like proms, sometimes do to economic reasons or that it is overwhelming to them.”

Halliburton said a room was available for those who might be overwhelmed by the lights and music where they could relax and calm down if the sights and sounds became too much.

Helping sponsor the event along with the Climate Crew were 3-2-1 Downs Syndrome, DCHS BETA, First Baptist Church, NHC, Kilgore’s and White Possum.
