Teaching that it far better to give than receive, organizers of the Fourth Annual Regifting Event, held Saturday at the Complex, hope the seed they plant will take root in the lives of the children who participated.
“If somebody can’t afford to buy a gift,
they can regift something,” explained organizer Kim Walker, noting the gifts
are collected all year for the event that allows all children ages 5 through 11
to get a gift for a parent, guardian or grandparent. “They get a gift for a
male and a female and we help them wrap it and put a card on it.”
Instead of paying for the gifts, the children helped others by making a blessing bag during the event. This year’s bags are going to foster care. Last year they went to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
“We’re just trying to plant a seed that
it’s not all about getting. It’s about giving, no matter how small or what you
are going through in life. You can always bless somebody else.”
They let all volunteers and shoppers decorate a quilt square Saturday during the regifting event. The quilt will be given away to someone in the community.
“Personally, the reason I do it to show God’s love and what better time to do it than Christmas,” Walker said, noting the entire event is made possible by volunteers.
