Smart watches
LeAnn Judkins

I don’t have  one.

But I desperately need/want one.

It’s a survival piece of colored metal.  And, on another electronic note, my Samsung smartphone is absolutely my daily lifeline.  Ask the Webb House Coffee Club members.  The genius invention of the many available smartwatches is truly better than the invention of sliced bread!  They can measure everything except the number of your daily bathroom visits.  And before too long, the watches will be revealing what I did during my high school Prom that I didn’t want anyone to know!  It’s a private personal matter. Unless a watch decides to tell me the ageless details in a written verbal display.

The history of the smartwatch (one word/all lower case letters) is cumulatively explained on www.wikepedia.com, “The smartwatch is a wearable computer; and has a local touchscreen interface for daily use.  Since 2015, features include available smartphone apps (see definition below), a mobile operating system, and a WIFI/Bluetooth connectivity.”

Wikipedia further explained, “Some smartphones function as portable media players, with FM radio, and playback of digital audio and video files via a Bluetooth headset.  Some models make telephone calls.  Some devices make digital cameras, temperatures, heart rate monitors, barometers, compasses, GPS receivers (Global Positioning System), tiny speakers, and microSD cards, which are recognized as storage devices.

Continued Wikipedia information reads, “Smartphones are advancing today, especially their design, battery capacity, and health-related applications, such as measuring heart rate and oxygen levels, sleep measurements, steps counted while walking, etc.”

Local young-adult resident, Cindy Hale, loves her newly-acquired smartwatch, “My watch isn’t an Apple watch (a favorite among wearers).  I paid just $30.00 on Amazon.com.  It tells me who’s calling on my phone (caller identification) and accepts messages, among many other applications,” she said favorably.

On another note, 94-year-old Bertha Robinson McBride sternly said that she would not purchase a smartwatch, which remains the favorite response among her senior living friends.  She further elaborated that her daughter, Walteen Carter Parker, was a superwatch fan and her delight was exemplified during one eventful day several years ago.

Bertha elaborated, “One day, my daughter, Walteen, did something to make her watch signal for assistance.   Her watch alerted the Smithville Police, who then, almost immediately, knocked on her residential house door on the Sparta Highway. “If you live alone, it’s a good idea to have one,” Bertha continued. Additionally, her granddaughter, Jama Carter Martin, also believes in and wears a sportswatch daily.

Case in point is my sister, Lucy Foutch of Hermitage, Tennessee, a single-home owner and resident who has owned and operated smartwatches for several years. Her advice is to diligently shop various locales for a smartwatch.  She elaborated, “You can find cheaper watches at various locations with the same internal applications as higher watches.” This remark was earlier collaborated by local resident Cindy Hale in her previous statement.

Just recently, the national media broadcast that the new smartphones can produce negative or positive test results, indicating your health status for COVID-19!  No more nasal swab tests.  I kid you not!

“The first digital watch, which debuted in 1972 (50- years-ago) was the Pulsar brand.  With the introduction of personal computers (PC’s) in the 1980’s, Seiko began to develop computers in the form of watches.  Also, during the 80’s, Casio began to market a successful line of “computer watches.”  Later, in 1994, the NASA astronauts began wearing the Timex Datalink Model 150 while living in the internal space station.

Throughout the smartphone inventive years, hundreds of trial watches have been developed, hoping to be the best overall smartwatch in the world.  Only one made it (see below).

“In 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted marketing approval for an Apple used app. (see definition below) called NightWare.  The app. aims to improve sleep for people suffering PTSD (Post Traumatic Sleep Disorder) related-nightmares, by vibrating when it detects a nightmare in progress, based on the monitoring of heart rate and body movement,” ibid.

Children’s smartwatches are sold throughout the world.  Regarding seniors, the disabled, or the elderly, superwatch actions can be reported,

utilizing their location to a caregiver or family member should they fall, become immobile or become lost.

If you have any computer doubt, call a teenager for their help.  They’re proficient in all things electronic.  It’s also a genetic inbred birth trait – young persons can conquer young modern inventions.

Face it. Use it.  It’s the future. We’re living in a modern, technological world.  Each succeeding year, there will be additional applications to master.

Never stop learning.

It’s American ingenuity.

It’s the American way.
