DeKalb County’s Carrie Smith, 102 young, is Alexandria’s oldest living resident. Alexandria Mayor Bennett Armstrong calls her "A Living Treasure." She is being recognized as part of February’s Black History Month observation.
As a child Ms. Carrie recalls being raised in a Christian home and being baptized in a pool. She also recalls when she played in the back yard until her mama would call them in.
"When my parents would say ‘you’d better hop to it or you’ll get a switching," Ms. Carrie said. "We were poor, but we were clean."
Ms. Carrie mentioned some of the innovations that have come about in her lifetime such as TV and the Victrola (radio) and commented about the nation’s first African-American President, Barack Obama, saying "He used God’s wisdom".
"God’s love in Jesus Christ," said Ms. Carrie is her secret for her long life.
