Sometimes we wonder why we are here on this earth. To what purpose do we serve? It seems some are called to high positions as powerful warriors of God, while some of us struggle to understand life. However, our purpose may be for one moment in time to fulfill one specific purpose. There are many mentioned in the Bible that were called for one moment in time such as Esther, Rahab, Jairus, the woman with an issue of blood, the woman at the well, and a Roman Centurion. Each of these fulfilled one purpose, whether it was to save a nation or to simply be an example of faith.
The Jewish people hated Romans and all they stood for. However, there was one Centurion who came to Jesus, pleading for Him to heal a servant. Jesus did not turn him away because he was Roman. He simply said, “I will come and heal him” (Matt 8:7). However, the Centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed” (Matt 8:8). What a statement of faith! Jesus remarked, “I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” (Matt 8:10). We do not know the Centurion's name or what happened to him after this encounter, but his faith is in God's Holy word as an example to us all. He was in Israel for a specific purpose for one moment in time - to be a witness to us what complete faith can accomplish.
Sometimes our only purpose is for one moment in time: helping a sick friend in need; speaking a word of encouragement; saying a simple prayer for one in need; or to be a witness to one lost soul. We don't count these as monumental achievements for God, yet He counts them as such. Anytime we reflect His glory and raise Jesus' name, God takes notice. It takes only one small seed of faith to grow into a towering witness for God. It is for us to spread those seeds of faith. We may count our actions as small, but to one person it could make an eternity of difference.
The next time you begin to wonder why you are still on this earth, remember - you may have been called to be an example of faith “for such a time as this” (Est 4:14).
Such a time as this
