Veterans Service Officer Ready to Assist

Are you a veteran in need of assistance? DeKalb County has a Veteran's Service Officer ready to help you, not only with filing claims, but for conversations about your service.

Retired military service officer Bill Rutherford is located on the first floor of the DeKalb County Courthouse and is ready to offer assistance. He is available for in-office visits each Tuesday and Thursday or can be reached by telephone at any time at 615-560-3610.

DeKalb County appreciates the service of all veterans and is proud to provide this service.

Smithville L.B.J. &C. Head Start accepting new students

Smithville L.B.J. &C. Head Start is now accepting new students for the 2022-23 School Year. Children 3-5 years old are eligible for the Head Start program, but spaces are limited and parents are encouraged to apply now. There is no cost for families who choose to participate in the program. L.B.J. & C. Head Start is committed to ensuring that children who leave our program are prepared when they enter the kindergarten program in the public schools. The Head Start program provides a comprehensive health service program that includes a broad range of medical, dental, mental health, and nutrition services for the children. L.B.J.& C. Justin Potter and Alexandria Libraries Summer Reading Program

“Oceans of Possibilities” is the theme for the 2022 Justin Potter and Alexandria Libraries Summer Reading Program and children of all ages are invited to participate June 2-23 at 2 p.m. each Thursday at the DeKalb County Complex Theatre Room. All events for both libraries will be at that location. Children can begin registering for Summer Reading at both libraries on May 23rd. Each child that registers and meets their goal will receive a participation certificate and other goodies at the end of the Summer Reading Program. The Summer Reading events are Thursday, June 2nd at 2:00 pm – Opening party with Mr. Bond’s Science Guys; Thursday, June 9th at 2:00 pm – Barry Mitchell’s “Deep Sea Circus; Thursday, June 16th at 2:00 pm –. Edgar Evins State Park Rangers and Animal Friends; Thursday, June 23rd at 2:00 pm – Final Party with Bob Tartar’s Animalogy Critters. Commodity Distribution, June 23

The Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency will hold a commodities distribution for DeKalb County on Thursday, June 23, 2022, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the DeKalb County UCHRA office. Sign-up will be available at the distribution site. The Upper Cumberland Human resource Agency does not discriminate in the basis of age, race, sex, color, national origin, religion, or disability in admission to, access to, or operations of its programs, services, or activities. This project is funded under a Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee.

 

Homecoming, June 26

Homecoming will be held at New West Point Freewill Baptist Church on June 26. Sunday school starts at 10 a.m. and Worship service at 11 a.m. Lunch will follow. Midnight Cry will be the singers. Everyone welcome!

 

Smithville Church of Christ VBS, June-27-30

Welcome to the Castle of Courage! At the Castle of Courage, kids will meet King Ardor and the members of his kingdom, including the famous Knight of the Oval Table. These mighty warriors will teach kids the true courage, the kind that helps us face whatever comes our way comes from trusting God. VBS starts at 9 to 11 a.m. the church is located at 520 Dry Creek Road, Smithville.

 

Sobriety Checkpoints, July 1

The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting a Sobriety Checkpoint on July 1, 2022 on State Route 56 in DeKalb County. The Tennessee Highway Patrol recognizes that sobriety checkpoints are highly visible and effective tools in the battle against impaired driving.

 

24th Annual Fiddler 5K and One Mile Fun Run

The 24th Annual Fiddler 5K and One Mile Fun Run, sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County will be Saturday, July 2. All proceeds from the race are used in building another Habitat for Humanity home in DeKalb County. The race on Saturday, July 2 will begin promptly at 7:00 a.m. RAIN OR SHINE on Church Street in front of the First Baptist Life Enrichment Center, Smithville. The race ends on Church Street in front of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. The Fiddler 5K is a qualifying race for the Run the Cumberland Medal Series of Races. Anybody who is interested in participating either in the one-mile fun run or the 5K may go to www.fiddler5k.com where you’ll find all the details and a link to online registration.

 

Water Bath Canning, Pressure Caning classes, July 12, July 27

Extension Agent, April Martin will be having 2 different classes on canning. The first will be water bathing canning class which will be held on July 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the DeKalb County Complex in the Commercial kitchen. Cost is $30 and includes lunch and all supplies. Blood Drive, July 18

DeKalb County Neighbors helping Neighbors Blood Drive will be held on Monday, July 18th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be held in the parking lot next to highway at Complex. School Calendar for 2022-23 Year

The school calendar is set for the 2022-23 year. A system-wide in-service day will be July 26 and at the individual schools July 27 & 28. Registration for students will be Monday, August 1 and the first full day of school is set for Wednesday, August 3. Tuesday, August 2 will be an administrative day for teachers only. DeKalb County students and teachers will have a full week off for fall break October 17-21, Thanksgiving November 21-25, and spring break March 27-31, and a two week break for Christmas December 21 to January 4. December 20 will be an abbreviated day. Students will return to school after the Christmas holiday on January 5, 2023. Schools will also be closed for Labor Day September 5, Dr. Martin Luther King Day January 16, President’s Day February 20, and Good Friday April 7. The last day of school will be May 24, 2023. Report cards will be issued at all schools on October 10, January 9, March 14, and May 24. Parent teacher conferences will be held at DCHS from 3-6 p.m. on October 10 and March 14 and at all the other schools, DWS, NES, SES, and DMS from 3-6 p.m. on October 13 and March 16.
