After a week of ice, snow and rain, last weekend was joyfully received with warm weather and sunshine. Hopefully spring will soon be coming. Palm Sunday is March 29 and Easter is April 5.
Congratulations to Matthew Foutch, who was one of the winners of the Caney Fork 2014 Washington Youth Tour Writing Contest. He, along with winners from Van Buren, White and Warren Counties, were eligible to enter the contest to win an expense-paid trip to our nation's capital. They will make their trip in June. He is a student at DeKalb County High School.
Also, congratulations to Julie Little, for being named Valedictorian at DCHS. She is the daughter of Dr. Scott Little and granddaughter of Rev. Terry and Rosie Little, all of Smithville.
Get well wishes to Tom Hill, Gail Webb, Bertha McBride, Betty Bailiff and others who are ailing.
Sympathy to the family of Lewis Conklin. His family were former neighbors on Sparta Highway.
Birthday wishes to: Jerry Williams, Robin Driver, Candance Vaughn, Terry Gibson, Barry Miller, Jeanette France, Wesley Carpenter, Drew Tatum, Marc Palamara, Julie Little, Meredith Little, Nola Sonner, Reeves Bellar, Tammy Judkins and Eli Oliver.
Derek Driver was another family birthday celebrant last week. He and his family were treated to piping hot vegetable soup, followed with ice cream and cake, at the home of his grandparents, Charlotte and Laird Barnard. Later, he was "roasted."
I had an unusual experience one day last week. Little three year old great nephew Robert Driver and I were at my house when a big black bird came into the house via the chimney. He flew into rooms at the back of the house. Little Robert grabbed the broom, and I opened the front door. Whew! He found the door and out he went. The black bird that is, not the Robert. Of course, the open chimney was the culprit!
Last Sunday at First Methodist, Dr. Steve Cooper presented the children's message. He talked about the pretzel, its origin and its symbolism--the three3 holes in the pretzel are symbols of God, His Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit. After the prayer, he gave each child a bag of pretzels. This is a symbol during Lent.
Also, First Methodist will have an egg hunt for the children on Palm Sunday afternoon.
Becky Roberts, Suzanne Prater and Maria Little attended Our Savior Lutheran Church in Nashville on March 15. Becky had a cousin who attended Concordia High School in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, who was in the school's choir who sang at the church. It was their acapella choir's Tennessee Tour.
Martha Moore and I attended the funeral of Mildred Hughes last Saturday in Gainesboro. Martha's husband, Rev. Edwin Moore and my husband, Rev. Cliff Ingram were Mildred's pastor for many years. Mrs. Hughes lived across the street from the church and welcomed these pastors and many more for many meals there. Reunions and funerals are convenient occasions to see ol' friends. We did see Betty and Harold Martin there.
Sympathy to Lora Webb and family at the death of her "daddy" this past week.
Get-well wishes to Tom Hill, Rev. Edwin Moore, Bertha McBride, Elene Hayes, Lora Webb, Bobbie Jean Page Thomas, Lindsay Roberts(daughter of Becky Roberts) and the mother of Miranda Waggoner, and Jackie Howard of Crossville.
Thought of the week: Welcome, spring time. We have had a rough winter!
Amen.
