The Amen Corner
Enjoy Memorial Day

Well, with this last week's warm weather, maybe spring is finally here.

Many folks will celebrate the arrival of Memorial Day this coming weekend. Many families will have cook-outs or take short trips. Also graduations are abound now.

Jenn Parrish, the Youth Director at First United Methodist Church, received a degree last weekend at Memphis Theological Seminary with a master's in Youth Ministry. She has been the Youth Director here for the last three years and has maintained a very active youth group in the church. Her Commissioning Service will be on May 31 during the worship service. She has acquired a fulltime position at Lawrenceville, Georgia in June. This also happens to be the church that Carlene Miller Hurst attends there. (Small world!)

The graduates at First Methodist were honored last Sunday during the worship service and then an ice cream social that evening. The 2015 high school graduates were: Kathryn Blair, Jackie Overby, Matthew Cooper, Savannah Driver, Julia Little, Will Tatum, Zach Tatum, Erin Colwell and Harli Silcox.

Sympathy to the family of Jared Scott Atnip. His service was last Sunday.

Get-well wishes to Linda and Hooper Judkins, Ashton Campbell, Betty Loeb, Sara Brown, and Tom Hill.

Good to see Joe Payne out at church Sunday.

Keep in mind Tommy Webb's explanation of Ed Bell's book, "Fish on the Steeple." Mr. Bell was a former resident of this area and wrote a book about Smithvillians. Mr. Bell's daughter Emily was a classmate of mine at MTSU. Tommy's presentation is May 30 at the county complex.

Jenn Parrish's parents, Mike and Marsha Parrish of Traverse City, Michigan, attended Jenn's graduation and brought her back to Smithville. They were her visitors last weekend here.

Be careful if you're travelling this Memorial Day weekend.

Thought of the week: "God never gives you more than you can handle. Never forget that when one door closes, another one opens. "

Amen.
