The meaning of Fathers Day

Sunday we celebrated as Father’s Day in the United States. What is the origin of Father’s Day? Mrs. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd decided that if we observe Mother’s Day, then we need to honor our fathers. Some claim that Father’s Day can be traced to Babylonia. Mrs. Dodd began a rigorous campaign to observe Father’s Day in June, 1910.

President Woodrow Wilson and President Calvin Coolidge supported the cause and made the third Sunday in June a national observance of Father’s Day.

So happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there. I always honored my father Houston Lockhart before his death in 1996. He was a driver for Trailways for over 30 years.

Get-well wishes to: Linda Judkins, Lora Webb, Norris and Bobbye Harrison, Sara Brown, Betty Baliff, Alice Foster, Kathy Bryant, Betty T. Loeb, Rev. Edwin Moore, and Laird Barnard.

McKenzie Tatum of Murfreesboro was the weekend guest of her grandparents, Pat and Larry Tatum.

The DCHS Class of 1955 held their class reunion last Saturday. They met in the reception room at city hall and enjoyed a pot luck meal.

There were 47 who graduated in 1955, and 17 have died since then. There were 24 at the reunion counting spouses.

Thought of the week: "Honor thy father and thy mother." Amen
