Hard to believe that November, our 11th month, is here. Where did the fall and those hot summer days go? Don't forget that Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday. Turn your clocks back an hour. Aaah! An extra hour of sleep. This Sunday is also All Saints Day.
It is a time in most churches where those who have died during the year are memoralized and remembered.
Also Indian Creek Baptist Church is participating in Operation Christmas Child. Many churches observe this goodwill activity by filling a shoebox with toys, etc. for children. This may be the only gift that some children receive. Boxes can be filled but designate on the lid the age of the child and whether it would be appropriate for boy or girl. Call Sue Puckett-Jernigan (597-7370) or the church (597-7299) if you want to drop a shoebox off to be sent. Our Sunday School class did this one year.
The Fall/Holiday Bazaar will be held this Friday at the First Methodist Fellowship Bldg. on Church Street, from 8-4. The rooms will be loaded with homemade items: quilts, jams, bread, handbags, jewelry, lawn chairs, Christmas items and other goodies. Lunch will be served 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Earle Cantrell will be present to autograph his hometown book and I will be there to autograph my Christmas dramas. So come start your holiday shopping early.
Congratulations to Daniel Hooper who was recently named Pharmacist of the Year at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. He is the handsome son of Dr. Doug and Brenda Hooper and grandson of T.M. and Juanita Hooper and Doyle Smith and the late Melford Smith. I have seen these little boys grow up in a Christian home.
Then Doug and Brenda were in my MYF group several years ago when I was their counselor. Proud of our hometown youth!
If anyone missed me last week, I was in Florida. A good friend of mine from Gainesboro, Elaine Craighead, picked me up last Sunday afternoon, right after our Church Charge Conference and we headed south.
We spent that night in Birmingham, then arrived in Destin the next day in time to do grocery shopping and check out the beach. It was so relaxing to just soak up some sunshine, eat lots of seafood and do more shopping. We even saw a wedding on the beach. Of course, the flower-covered arch kept blowing over. Naturally, , everyone was barefooted, even the minister. Beautiful weather! Met the nicest people from Michigan around the pool.
My sympathy to the family of Melford Smith, who had a long life until age 90. I remember her as the librarian here. She and Doyle usually won the prize as the oldest grandparents at the First Methodist Church.
Being out of town, I missed the funeral. she was a nice lady and known for making her yo-yo's out of quilt scraps.
Don't forget to get your flu shot as that bug usually invades us in the fall and wintertime.
The Headstart children get a holiday on Nov. 11 (Veterans Day).
That is also my anniversary and my husband was a veteran.
Stay warm on these frosty mornings and cool nights but keep a song in your heart. Amen.
