Watching the Olympics every day has exhausted me physically with all that energy used. Whew!
I had the opportunity to work in the election last Thursday with a great group of co-workers: Linda, Lena, Nell, Chris, Roger and Jo Ellen. Of course, Dennis and Muriel in her Hawaiian poncho kept an eye on us. It was great to see so many avid folk who exercised their right to vote.
Allen Mitchell, son of Charmaine Mitchell, was a judge at the DeKalb County Fair's American Idol Contest last Thursday. Allen is a recording promoter in Nashville.
Well, the 2012-13 school year has begun. For a child's first time, like in Pre-K or Kindergarten, it can be a frightening or exciting experience, depends on the parents' preparation for the big day away from home. I have found that if the parents prolong leaving them during that first week it can add to the child's anxiety. Say "goodbye and I'll see you this afternoon" and leave. I'll give credit to the Pre-K staff as I have observed their professionalism in helping these students adjust and learn.
Registration is in progress now for Headstart. They crank up for their school on Aug. 20.
If you need your coffee table cleaned off, I have just the person to do it. I have a little one-year-old great-great nephew, Robert, who I kept three days and nights last week. He can take one swish of the hand and all my magazines, mail, etc. are gone in the floor, of course. He's for rent-cheap!
A great big welcome to the new Youth Director, Jenn Parrish, who will be on the staff at First United Methodist Church. Sunday was her first official day here in town.
The DCHS Class of 1954 will hold their next reunion on Sept. 15 at the Christian Fellowship Building. It will be a luncheon and the gathering is at 11 a.m. If you know of someone in that class, please let them know or call Sherry Bush. Invitations have gone out to those with current addresses from Bill Hendrixson, class president.
I lost two good friends last week. Faye Layne, wife of Rev. Larry Layne of Mcminnville, died. Faye was active in their church's prayer shawl ministry. She brought me one several years ago. Larry was a student in one of my husband's churches in Nashville when he went into the ministry. Then Gary Wiggins, a member of the Gainesboro UMC, when we were there became a lay minister. He was appointed to the Bon Air UMC about four years ago and recently became the minister at Brush Creek UMC. He died of a heart attack last week. His wife, Janet, a school teacher, was our choir director. Condolescences to their families.
"If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.” John F. Kennedy, 1961." America just works better when people have a chance to live their dreams" (Bill Clinton, 2004).
Amen, amen!
