The Amen Corner

Labor Day, Sept. 5, is just around the corner!  Research reveals that the observance of Labor Day, dates back to 1882. It was organized to honor working people, which would be 98% of us.  President Grover Cleveland declared it a national holiday in 1894
This reminds me of my mother declaring that after Labor Day, we must  put away our summer whites.  Now, I don't know the origin of this, probably Emily Post or Martha Stewart.  I still observe this function.
I have laid out five outfits for the remainder of August and the first five days of September. Then into storage they go!
I'm not ready for fall.  I still have several summer projects on my agenda, like perfecting my backyard, some porch painting, etc.
I did a first this summer.   Due to my abundant supply of cucumbers, I made pickles and froze a bunch of okra.  Now, shhh, don't tell my family, as this may be their Christmas present.  They say homemade items are always appreciated.
Welcome home to Barry and Ginny Miller.  They spent two and a half months in Montana. They were fortunate to occupy their nephew's home, as he was away during this time. Barry stated that they got up every morning and went hiking in the mountains. They had low humidity and cool weather compared to our heat.  He added that they ran into snow drifts at one point, left over from last year.
It's nice to renew school friendships.  Two former classmates, Margaret Ann Robinson,  from Birmingham, Ala., and Joyce Reeder Hutchins, from Sterling Heights, Mich., were weekend guests of Charlotte Barnard, this past weekend.  Joyce also visited her brother in Alexandria while Margaret Ann was a house guest of Janey Knowles.
If anyone is interested in the novel,  The Shack, by William Paul Young, there is a study group in town.  This book was on the New York Times best seller list.  This study group meets at the First United Methodist Church at 11:00 on Wednesday.  It is a 13week study with two classes have already meeting. So, if my math serves me correctly, that leaves 11 more classes.  Come and join if you are interested. It definitely has a profound message.
A recent visitor in my home inquired why I have rubber bands on my cabinet knobs in my kitchen.  It was obvious that they weren't familiar with the antics of a toddler.  They are famous explorers!
At this time, I am concerned with the status of my friends at Martha's Vineyard and my stepdaughter and her family in West Virginia, due to the fury of Irene coming up the coast. There’s so much damage already!
In closing, some people are kind, polite and sweet spirited ; until you try to sit in their pew at church.  This happened to us one time and if looks could kill!  We graciously got up and moved!  Amen.
