February is a special month with two famous presidents born in this month, Valentine’s Day, the beginning of Lent and other special people born in this month.
Our first U.S. president was George Washington, born Feb. 22, 1732, in Virginia. He died at Mt. Vernon at the age of 67. I have visited Mt. Vernon, a lovely plantation home. His biography is worth reading.
Then Abraham Lincoln was born Feb. 12, 1809 and he was the 16th U.S. president. He was the first president to wear a beard and the tallest at 6'4". His life had a humble childhood. In fact, there is a movie out now about him. We visited the birthplace of Lincoln in Hodgenville, Ky., many years ago, built around a log cabin.
Special birthday greetings for the first half of February to Wallace Caldwell, Ben Driver, Luke Oliver, Michelle Driver, Bob Pettis, Hooper Judkins, Dr. Mitch Tatum, Justin France, Jerry Winfrey, Jean Harney, Lora Webb, Lois Farwell, Ashton Campbell, Ella Roark, Anne Foutch Gilpin, Nathaniel Theriaque , Darren Waggoner and Sammie Foster George.
Get-well wishes to Bobbie Loring Johnson who has been hospitalized in Murfreesboro with a stroke. Many may remember Juanita Loring, mother of Bobbie and Diane, who worked at Webb's Drug Store for many years, and also the daughters of Jack Loring.
My sister and I were out browsing the other day and discovered a new business in town. It is Sew Fabulous (located in the old Beshearse Grocery Store adjacent to the high school on Hightway 70). It is a consignment shop and Bea was the head clerk along with Debbie who does alterations. Check them out.
Talked with Ellie Briggs who heads up the clothes closet along with the food pantry. The Bright Hill UMC gang are asking for magazines and books to send to VA (No Playboy, please). They are also in need of old worn-out jeans to make quilts and God pillows for children. Call Ellie at 215-7615 or Linda Judkins, 597-7025 if you can donate these items.
Senior Angels will be having a Valentine Party on Thursday, Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day at the Methodist CFC Building. Anyone is invited. Just bring any type of food for the luncheon. Bible Trivia will be played and a magazine swap or magazines for VA and wear red. February birthday people will be honored.
Several weeks ago I featured Louise Frazier as a person I admired. This week I want to feature a pretty petite blonde who wears several hats. She is Lora Webb, wife of Alan webb. Besides working as an assistant CEO and social worker at The Webb House, she is coordinator of Project Graduation with Emily as a graduate this year. In addition, she is assisting with the planning and opening of another Webb House in McMinnville slated for this spring. Her community work revolves around her children. She’s been on the Boy Scout committee, a cub scout leader for 12 years and received the Long Rifle Award and on the Pre-School Board and serves on almost every committee in our public schools. She is on the board of the Basketball Boosters and on the Art Revolution Board. She and Alan have four children: Anderson, an upcoming graduate at Belmont College; Martha at Tenn. Tech; Emily, a DCHS senior; and Thomas, at Middle School.
This family is also active in the Smithville United Methodist Church and occupy the front section in church every Sunday. I admire Lora for being a dedicated mother, her concern for those at this assisted living home and her community involvement.
Read an important tip the other day. If you're driving in the rain at night and have a hard time seeing, put on sunglasses. And don't use your cruise control as it could hydraplane.
Amen.
