The Amen Corner
A busy holiday weekend

We did have a sunny, pleasant Memorial weekend for outdoor plans.
Older American Day at the Justin Potter Library was a huge success.  Kathy Hendrixson, librarian, was mistress of ceremonies with a good sense of humor before a large crowd on Thursday morning. A reading by Betty Pankey, door prizes and storyteller  Charles Maynard from Maryville, and lunch made a good day for us older Americans. Thanks to the planners. I sat with Wanda Poss, senior citizen director, who gave us a full June calendar for their center.
Then adjournment found several heading down to Caney Fork Electric Coop for their annual Appreciation Day for a good lunch and other doorprizes. Thanks to their staff, too.
Belated-birthday wishes to Lewis Conklin, a good friend.
Get-well wishes to Elene Hayes, Charmaine Mitchell, Joyce Poss, Bea Garrison, and the Littles.
Eli Gill and Jordan Wilkins will be heading to Boys State this week in Murfreesboro. Congratulations to these fine young men. We are proud of them.
It's VBS time! This is a good alternative to several hours of TV and watching videos.
Smithville Cumberland Presbyterian dates are May 27-31, 6-8:30 p.m.; Covenant Baptist-May 28-30, 6-8 p.m.;  New West Point Freewill Baptist-June 3-7, 6:30 p.m.; Calvary Baptist--June 3-7, 6-8 p.m.; New Home Baptist-June 10-14, 6:30-8:30 p.m.; and  First Methodist-June 19-21, 6:00-8:15 p.m. with Gina Tatum, Director.
I attended the most elaborate wedding in Gainesboro Saturday evening at the home of Charles and Jan Glover. Their youngest daughter  Leah married Josh Hayes from Nashville. When we were appointed to the Gainesboro United Methodist Church, Leah was only three years old.
Their vows were said on a high hill overlooking the Cumberland River and valley. Just as the outdoor ceremony began, the cottonwood trees started producing fluffy white seeds which were flying around. The seeds looked like snowflakes. The guests were viewing all this like a planned feature of the ceremony. It was awesome! After the ceremony, the 180 guests who had ridden up to the hilltop home were invited to partake of the catered salad bar and buffet under large tents.
After the sumptuous dinner, the guests were invited to the wooden dance floor where there was live music. I spent the night with a dear friend, Jean, and motored on home Sunday morning, even across the one lane Hurricane Bridge, in time for church services.
Retirement-wishes to Kathy Carpenter, wife of Pastor John Carpenter of First United Methodist, who retired from Vanderbilt Medical Group on May 17. Kathy started her career at South Central/AT&T for 24 years.  She has also worked for American Constructors and Black Box. She plans to enjoy the summer with her two grandsons, Wesley and Collin here, and Jodi and Joshua Carpenter, their other grandchildren in Smyrna.
Goodbye May and Hello June! Let the summer begin!
